Erste Group is active in Hungary since 1997. At that time it acquired formerly state-owned Mezőbank, which was soon renamed Erste Bank Hungary. Following the acquisition of and merger with Postabank in 2003/04, Erste Bank Hungary has developed in to one the leading retail banks in the country: it serves about 800,000 customers through a nationwide network of nearly 200 branches389 ATMs and about 1700 POS terminals. In addition, customers can also access banking services in 326 post offices thanks to the strategic cooperation with Magyar Posta (Hungarian Post). Erste Bank Hungary has a retail market share of 11% and 8% in retail and corporate lending, respectively, and is well placed to further expand its overall market position in the future.
